All rights with respect to benefits of a member of the Plan will be governed solely by the master policies issued by the underwriters. These policies may be examined at the NSTU Central Office.

 


General Information

The Trustees of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union are charged with the responsibility of administering and monitoring the Group Insurance Policies of the NSTU. The Union has a number of policies that are considered "group" -- group meaning that those insured under these policies:

  1. get a preferred rate.
  2. share risk as a group for the benefit of an individual.

The group policies administered by the NSTU Trustees are:

  • Total Care- Medical and Dental
  • Group Life Insurance
  • Accidental Death & Dismemberment
  • MEDOC® Travel Plan/Trip Cancellation and Interruption
  • Salary Continuation/Long Term Disability (not available to retirees)
  • Critical Illness

These are the only group insurance programs that offer a preferred rate and a group sharing of risk as a direct benefit of being a member of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union.

Structure

  • The NSTU Provincial Executive appoints Insurance Trustees.  Insurance Trustees are governed by the terms of the Trust Deed
  • Insurance Trustees provide insurance.

Total Care Medical

The NSTU has negotiated for active members, payment by the Employer for 100% of the Union Total Care Medical Plan, Single and Family Policy, as follows for those who apply for coverage:

Public School Member Single/Family $1,024.08/$2,651.16
Community College Member Single/Family $1,046.88/$2,706.24
APSEA Member Single/Family $1,024.08/$2,651.16

The above are not applicable to Reserve Members.

Total Care Dental Plan

The NSTU has negotiated for active members, payment by the Employer for 65% of the Union Total Care Dental Plan, Single and Family Policy, as follows for those who apply for coverage:

Union Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment Policy

The NSTU has negotiated for each active member, payment by the Employer for purchase of a Union Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment Policy as follows:

Other Group Insurance Possibilities

Members may purchase, at group rates, additional life insurance up to a total of $300,000.  Other group plans at member's option and payment include accidental death and dismemberment, long term disability, MEDOC® travel insurance, trip cancellation, critical illness and automobile and home insurance.  These can be paid through monthly payroll deductions.
