NSTU President - Shelley Morse

Shelley Morse took office as the 43rd president of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union on August 1, 2012; becoming the fifth president of the over 10,000 member organization to be elected by universal suffrage.

A career teacher in Kings County for 29 years, Shelley holds an Associate in Education diploma from the Nova Scotia Teachers College (1981); a Bachelor of Education degree (1982), Diploma in Special Education (1987), and Master of Education degree (1994) from Acadia University. As a lifelong learner she continues to be involved in professional development through coursework, in-services and conferences. She is currently completing a Business Administration diploma program at NSCC.

Shelley taught the majority of her career at Gaspereau Valley Elementary School. From 2004-2012 she was a teaching Vice-principal at Port Williams Elementary School, Aldershot Elementary School, and New Minas Elementary School.

Shelley served as the First Vice-president of the NSTU from 2008-2010, and has been a member of the Union's Provincial Economic Welfare Committee. She has sat on two negotiating teams, most recently in 2012-2013. She has also been an advocate in the areas of equity, professional development, member services, status of women, and public affairs/public relations; working to uphold rights and benefits for Public School teachers, Community College Faculty, Community College Professional Support and APSEA members. She served on the NSTU provincial executive for a total of six years. Shelley served as the President of the NSTU Kings Local on two different occasions. As an active member since her first year of teaching, she has been involved in all facets of the NSTU at the local, regional, provincial and national levels.

At the national level, Shelley Morse has been a NSTU delegate at the Canadian Teachers' Federation (CTF) AGM eight times. In 2009-2011 she represented the NSTU as a member of the CTF Advisory Committee on Diversity and Human Rights; in 2012-2014 was appointed to the CTF Advisory Committee on the Status of Women; and for 2012-2015 she sits as a trustee for the CTF Trust Fund. She also served on the Resolutions Committee in 2013-2014.

Currently she sits on the CTF Board of Directors and represents the Union as a member of the Council of Atlantic Provinces Teacher Organizations (CAPTO). At the 2014 CTF AGM, Shelley was elected one of four Vice-Presidents for the executive board. She was appointed Chair of CTF Advisory Committee on the Status of Women, and is now a member of the Finance Committee.

In 2012, Shelley was also elected Vice-president of the Nova Scotia Teachers College Alumni Association; was appointed to sit on the Board of Directors of Peaceful Schools International; and received a Women of Excellence Award for Education and Research from the Canadian Progress Club of Halifax.

The Nova Scotia Teachers Union represents more than 10,000 public school teachers, teachers who work for the Atlantic Provinces Special Education Authority, and Community College faculty and professional support staff. Since 1895, this organization has worked to improve the quality of public education in Nova Scotia.
